National Assembly Speaker Receives Croatian Ambassador to Serbia

The National Assembly Speaker, Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Serbia, H.E. Gordan Markotic.

The National Assembly Speaker said he expected an improvement in the two countries’ relations in the upcoming period and that Ambassador Markotic would help the development of these relations. Stefanovic also expects the intensified cooperation to result in better parliamentary cooperation considering that both parliaments have established parliamentary friendship groups.
As priorities in the two countries’ relations, Stefanovic listed Euro-integration, economic cooperation and cooperation between parliamentary committees. Croatia’s experience of the process of accession to the European Union would prove very useful for Serbia, said Stefanovic adding that the criteria for Croatia’s accession process had been very strict and the same criteria would be applied in the talks with Serbia.
The National Assembly Speaker informed Ambassador Markotic on the steps the Parliament is taking to successfully overview the Euro-integration process and take part in it. Speaking of economic cooperation, Stefanovic underlined Croatia’s significant investments into Serbia, adding that there are either no Serbian investments into Croatia or they are very few. Stefanovic mentioned the possible ventures onto third markets and the fact that Croatia, although it is a European Union country, can use Serbia’s comparative advantages in the trade with third countries. Stefanovic also mentioned cooperation in the sphere of tourism i.e. joint tourist offers.
Markotic agreed with the possible ventures onto third markets, underlining the compatibility of the two countries’ economic potentials, especially in the building and military industry. Regarding tourist potentials, Markotic underlined possible ventures onto distant markets.
Speaking about Serbia’s Euro-integration, Markotic said that, in addition to strong political support, Croatia is ready to offer Serbia technical support in the Euro-integration process, saying that in Croatia’s EU talks he was the one who closed chapter 23. Ambassador Markotic then proceeded to share Croatia’s experiences of the EU talks with Speaker Stefanovic, stressing the close coordination between the legislative and the executive on coming up with unified views on certain issues in the talks.
Both Speaker Stefanovic and Ambassador Markotic are pleased by the imminent visit of Croatian President Ivo Josipovic to Serbia deeming, that it would help further the two countries relations.
