Brnabic Meets with New Head of European Union Delegation to Serbia

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, met today with the new Head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia, Ambassador Andreas von Beckerath.

Brnabic welcomed von Beckerath to Serbia and emphasized that Serbia remains a credible partner of the European Union, and full membership is the strategic goal of our country.

The National Assembly Speaker stressed that reforms in the area of the rule of law and the electoral process remain the focus of the Parliament's work, especially in the context of the implementation of ODIHR recommendations and the election of REM members, with the expectation that these efforts will contribute to the opening of Cluster 3.

She also expressed concern about the lack of an adequate response to hate rhetoric in Croatia, as a member state of the European Union, pointing out that such behaviour is in sharp contrast to the values that the EU promotes and protects.

She also informed Ambassador von Beckerath that, regarding cases of intimidation of families of politicians, journalists and various officials by protesters, she had officially notified all competent institutions and representatives of the European Union, from whom she was expecting a response.

National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic assessed that the upcoming period is of particular importance for restoring citizens' trust in Serbia's European perspective, expressing her belief that cooperation with Ambassador von Beckerath will be successful, and wished him much success in his new mandate.

EU Ambassador Andreas von Beckerath expressed his satisfaction with his first meeting with National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic and noted that he looked forward to working closely with her and other members of parliament. He reiterated the EU's strong commitment to Serbia's European path, stressing the importance of accelerating reforms for the benefit of all citizens, in particular in the areas of the REM, the electoral framework, the rule of law, and good neighbourly relations. He also stressed the importance of refraining from rhetoric that could lead to increased tensions in the region and within the country.
