National Assembly Speaker Opens Seventh Conference “The Economist: The World in 2017”

Opening the conference “The Economist: The World in 2017” National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic stressed how important it is for the National Assembly, as the representative house of all the citizens, to be the venue where the challenges the world and Serbia are to face in 2017 are discussed.


“I am sure the Government of the Republic of Serbia will continue to pursue its active, clearly profiled and designed foreign policy in the coming year, one that contributes to Serbia’s position on the regional, European and international scene. In it will continue to have the support of the National Assembly, especially in view of the rising importance of parliamentary diplomacy for international relations”, said the Speaker.

She stressed that the threat of terrorism, migrant crisis, economic challenges, rising extremism, are just some of the hot topics Europe and the world are faced with today, adding that Serbia is resolute in its decision to protect common European and civilizational values, just as it is ready for all the challenges today’s world is faced with.

“It is important that Serbia continues to work on maintaining political stability because that helps us protect our citizens’ common interest, as well as the peace and stability in the region. At the same time, we will continue to contribute to the Euro-integration process as one of our foreign policy priorities. The opening of every new chapter sends an important message both to the citizens of Serbia and to all the countries of the Western Balkans that the doors of the EU are not closed, which is hugely important for the economic and political development of the entire region”, concluded Gojkovic.

In his address, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that no one should be worried about Serbia’s future because it has a stable economic situation grounded in regulated public finance. He stressed that the global political and economic situation is complicated and complex, while the situation is Serbia though complicated in view of the situation in the region, has a better perspective compared to the global scene.

Serbia’s prospects are drastically better than before, he opined, but also warned that it all depends on us and our responsibility, knowledge, work and desire to maintain stability.

He stated that next year Serbia would build more solid and stable relations with the countries in the region, which is important for economic growth, and announced a visit to India in January 2017as one serious growing economy. Also, he added he would follow the Russian Federation’s economic measures and economic developments in China in view of Chinese economy’s impact on global economy. He also stressed that Serbia would maintain its responsible and friendly ties with everybody, from Albania to Croatia, to build a better and more solid relations, because it is imperative for economic growth.

The participants were also addressed by Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Ana Brnabic and Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Aleksandar Vulin, while Russian Ambassador H.E. Alexander Chepurin and UK Ambassador H.E. Denis Keefe were also among the many speakers of the panel.
