European Integration Committee Chairperson Meets with Commissioner for Protection of Equality

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs met today at the National Assembly with the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Milan Antonijevic to discuss the Commissioner’s activity plans in the upcoming period, as well as the possibilities for advancing the cooperation between the Committee and the independent regulatory body.

Kovacs and Antonijevic agreed that the National Assembly’s committees, in addition to considering the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and other independent bodies’ annual activity reports, should also use other available tools for advancing and maintaining continuous communication and exchange of information of mutual benefit.

The officials agreed that it would be very useful if the National Assembly’s working bodies used more intensively their privilege to request compliance reports concerning the fulfilment of recommendations sent by the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality to the Government and thus perform their control role more efficiently.

They ascertained that political alliance discrimination, discrimination of national minorities and women, as well as domestic violence and hate speech are current topics that demand additional consideration. Performing its control role, the European Integration Committee can organise public hearings, as well as sittings outside of the National Assembly seat, to discuss these topics which are significant both from the aspect of protecting equality and European integration, stressed Kovacs.
