Gojkovic with Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Ismail Kahraman, currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia.


Gojkovic and Kahraman agreed that the two are committed to furthering relations and raising the levels of cooperation in which their respective parliaments can play a significant role and truly contribute to the deepening of overall relations.

Gojkovic said that the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Serbia has opened a new chapter in the two countries relations and Serbia and Turkey are determined to continue to advance relations, a decision confirmed by today’s visit of the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, so soon after the President’s.

The Serbian Assembly Speaker said that the parliamentary cooperation pursued according to the Protocol of Cooperation signed in 2015 in Ankara is comprehensive and dynamic stressing that there is ample room to intensify cooperation between the parliamentary friendship groups and working bodies tasked with foreign affairs, security, trade, energy, transportation, tourism, education and culture, areas of interest for both sides, also recognized as key areas for cooperation by the two countries’ governments.

The two parliament speakers also discussed the possible establishment of a joint cooperation commission as an additional way to promote relations between the two countries.

The Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Ismail Kahraman said that parliamentary relations reinforce the two countries’ friendship, adding that he was sure Serbia and Turkey would develop good cooperation at the political and economic level, as well as educational and cultural.

Kahraman said that he expected the two sides to do all in their power to realize the 16 agreements signed during the Turkish President’s visit.

Kahraman thanked Serbia and the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia for their support of the Turkish institutions during the failed coup attempt stressing that in times of trouble Serbia has been on the side of Turkey and democracy.

Kahraman took the opportunity to invite the Serbian Parliament Speaker to pay a return visit to Turkey.
