Gojkovic with Head of Macedonian Parliament

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia Talat Xhaferi, currently in a working visit to Serbia.


Gojkovic said that the two parliaments have opened a significant dialogue today as they play a pivotal role in the development of overall bilateral relations and that the wish is for the parliamentarians as representatives of the citizens to send a clear message about the need for political dialogue and deepening of overall cooperation.

Gojkovic said that it is very important for Serbia and Macedonia to continue to develop good relations and today’s visit of the Head of the Macedonian Parliament is an indicator that there is will and readiness for the two countries to advance relations in the citizens’ interest.

The Head of the Macedonian Parliament said he was happy for the opportunity to visit Serbia, a friendly country with which Macedonia shares a high degree of understanding and trust, as well as close familial relations.

Gojkovic and Xhaferi agreed that Serbia and Macedonia share the same goal – EU accession which opens up additional room for interparliamentary cooperation, especially their Euro-integration committees. Gojkovic added that Serbia fully supports Macedonia’s European integration and is open to all types of cooperation and exchange of relevant experiences. The National Assembly Speaker said that expediting the membership talks and making the region’s EU prospects clearer is vital, adding that the recent summit is Sofia was significant in that regard.

Gojkovic and Xhaferi stressed the importance of regional cooperation for the stability and progress of the region, emphasising the significance of the Berlin Process in that regard, and commended the realization of joint infrastructural projects, economic cooperation and ventures onto third markets.

The two heads of parliament also commended the cooperation between the two countries’ governments, especially economic cooperation, saying they were ready to support these efforts through the ratification of any agreements they might sign.

Speaking of strengthening and maintaining regional stability, Xhaferi applauded the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, and Gojkovic stressed that Serbia insists on the implementation of the Brussels Agreement, especially the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities.

They also discussed the status of the Macedonian national minority in Serbia and the Serbian national minority in Macedonia and the need to implement the agreements in the field signed by the two states and ratified by their parliaments.
