Gojkovic in Doha – Meetings with Parliament Speaker and Foreign Minister

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met with the Speaker of the Advisory Council of the State of Qatar Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khulaifi and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss improving relations between Serbia and Qatar and developing parliamentary cooperation, as well as many issues of common interest.


Gojkovic said that Serbia is determined to develop comprehensive cooperation with the State of Qatar, stressing the importance of continued political dialogue and in that context, the planned visit of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Serbia.

Gojkovic and the Speaker of the Advisory Council of the State of Qatar Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khulaifi agreed that today’s meeting is of exceptional importance as the first interparliamentary contact between Serbia and the State of Qatar, which will greatly contribute to the countries’ overall relations.

Gojkovic urged to develop and improve parliamentary cooperation and to that end, invited the Speaker of the Advisory Council to come and visit Serbia. The National Assembly Speaker also spoke about the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the State of Qatar which will be working on the development of said relations.

Meeting with the Qatari dignitaries, Gojkovic said she expected the economic relations between the two countries to improve through an increased volume of trade and investment, adding that there are many advantages of investing into Serbia and as well as a direct Belgrade-Doha flight. The officials emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries’ respective chambers of commerce to encourage networking among business people. They also highlighted the importance of cooperation in other areas, such as education, healthcare and culture, and Gojkovic informed her hosts about the political processes in Serbia and the region and Serbia’s contribution to regional stability.

The National Assembly Speaker is taking part in the 17th Doha Forum which has brought politicians, academicians, experts, entrepreneurs and civil society organisations from around the world together to discuss international cooperation, importance of political and economic stability, political, economic and legal as well as the humane aspects of refugee issues. At the margins of the Forum Gojkovic had many meetings with foreign dignitaries, including the Cypriot Parliament Speaker Demetris Syllouris and Ugandan Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa.
