Gojkovic at IAEA General Conference, Serbia Enters Board of Governors

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic headed the Serbian delegation to the annual General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, where Serbia has, for the first time, entered the international organization’s Board of Governors for the period 2017 – 2019.

Addressing the General Conference composed of representatives of the 168 member states, Gojkovic stressed that Serbia is traditionally and firmly dedicated to the safe use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, in line with international instruments and practice.

“One of our chief goals is to protect the people and the environment from possible safety risks and make sure nuclear energy is used for global peace, prosperity and the well-being of future generations” said Gojkovic, adding that by taking part in the international exercise simulating the global emergency response to a nuclear accident Serbia has again confirmed its adherence to the fundamental objectives of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Parliament Speaker also said that the procedure for the ratification of the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste, both attempting to, using various measures and international cooperation, prevent the risk of nuclear accidents and protect the people, society and environment, has entered the last stage.

“Serbia is dedicated to strengthening its national legal and regulatory system, perfecting and harmonizing it with the international safety standards and practice, as well as EU regulations and practice”, said Gojkovic.

In the course of the General Conference Gojkovic is scheduled to meet with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano.
