Gojkovic and Speaker of Parliament of Guinea-Bissau

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the Speaker of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau Cipriano Cassama, currently in official visit to Serbia.


Gojkovic and Cassama underlined the two countries’ commitment to strengthen relations firmly grounded in the traditional friendly relations from the period of de-colonization and the Non-Aligned Movement.

Gojkovic thanked the Speaker of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau Cipriano Cassama for his country’s clear support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, saying that Guinea-Bissau has shown that it respects international law, United Nations decisions and the UNSC Resolution 1244 and is one of the countries that recognize the dangerous precedent set by the unilateral declaration of independence by a part of a sovereign state. Gojkovic thanked the Speaker of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau for coming to Serbia and reaffirming Guinea-Bissau’s clear stance on the matter.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau said that his country has a firm stance on Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, that it fully supports Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and the UN Resolution and will continue to do so.

Gojkovic spoke of Serbia’s strategic commitment to renew and strengthen cooperation with African countries, mentioning that today’s meeting, which will undoubtedly encourage the development of these relations, is taking place at the National Assembly House, the historic edifice that hosted the founding summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Cassama said that renewing cooperation and intensifying the exchange between parliaments, government and citizens is in the new generations’ best interest, adding that he had come to Serbia to offer support to a brotherly country, respected in in the world, and its hard-working and proud people.

Gojkovic and Cassama agreed to sign an agreement of cooperation in the interest of advancing relations, as well as define priority areas of cooperation, and that the Serbian Assembly would offer political and administrative support to the Parliament of Guinea-Bissau. Gojkovic and Cassama also agreed to cooperate closely in international parliamentary organizations and offer mutual support on issues of importance.

Gojkovic and Cassama, who is also the Chairman of the African Parliamentary Union Executive Committee, spoke about possible modalities of cooperation within the African Parliamentary Union, and with a view to advancing dialogue and cooperation between the two parliaments, Cassama invited the Serbian Assembly Speaker to visit Guinea-Bissau.

The two parliament speakers also discussed developing cooperation in other fields, especially agriculture, and Cassama said that advancing agricultural cooperation would be especially good for Guinea-Bissau as an agricultural country.
