Gojkovic Meets with Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the Speaker of the Russian State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, heading the State Duma delegation to the second session of the Russian State Duma - National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Cooperation Commission.

The speakers of the National Assembly and the State Duma agreed that the relations between Serbia and the Russian Federation are exceptionally good, based on traditional friendship and cultural and historic ties, with Gojkovic pointing out that it is essential for Serbia and Russia to continue to develop their excellent relationship in the modern world and that Serbia truly appreciates that fact that it is the first European country to be visited by the State Duma Speaker. Volodin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin strives to fortify these relations, which is an effort the State Duma is also working on.

Gojkovic and Volodin agreed that the establishment and operation of the State Duma - National Assembly Interparliamentary Commission as an additional effort to strengthen relations based on the Interparliamentary Cooperation Agreement, is of great importance. The two parliament speakers also agreed that the cooperation of parliamentary delegations within international parliamentary organizations is especially important with the State Duma Speaker proposing to look into new forms of cooperation to ensure better results and adding that intensifying cooperation within these organizations, especially the European ones, PACE and OSCE PA, would also prove useful.

Gojkovic thanked the Russian Federation for its firm and unswerving support of Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, saying the country is committed to regional stability and that talks of Greater Albania are unacceptable and deplorable.

The State Duma Speaker said that the Russian Federation believes in consistent policy and its parliamentarians are dedicated to supporting Serbia's efforts to maintain its territorial integrity and reaffirmed that Russia's stance relies on international law and the UNSC Resolution 1244. Volodin said that it is important to abide by the achieved agreements such as the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities, adding that the European Union is obliged by the UN mandate to do all in its power that the Kosovo Albanians stick to their assumed obligations.

Gojkovic and Volodin also discussed other issues of importance for the two countries and agreed about the importance of combating terrorism, a global threat that requires joint efforts which the parliaments should contribute to.

The State Duma Speaker invited the National Assembly Speaker, on the behalf of the South Korean Parliament Speaker Chung Sye-kyun and himself, to take part in the second meeting of heads of parliament of Eurasian countries in Seoul, 26-28 June, which is the first invitation to Serbia to participate in this important multi-lateral parliamentary cooperation forum.
