Gojkovic Meets with Rouhani and Larijani

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic attended the inauguration of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani on the behalf of the Republic of Serbia and in the course of her stay in Tehran she meet with President Rouhani and with the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Larijani.


The National Assembly Speaker conveyed Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s sincere congratulations on Rouhani’s re-election, expressing her belief that President Rouhani would continue to contribute to the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Gojkovic opined that Serbia and Iran’s bilateral relations, characterized by comprehensive dialogue, are good and friendly, mentioning that this year marks the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Gojkovic thanked Iran for its continued and principled support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and for not-recognizing the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as for its stance on Kosovo’s UNESCO bid.

In the meeting with Islamic Consultative Assembly Speaker Larijani, Gojkovic said that interparliamentary cooperation plays an important role in overall relations and that there is potential to intensify contacts between the two parliaments’ working bodies, especially their respective foreign affairs, agriculture and economy committees and between their delegations in international parliamentary organizations such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, adding that the Serbian and Iranian parliaments’ friendship groups could also greatly contribute to the development of relations. To that end, Gojkovic invited the Iranian Assembly Speaker to visit Serbia.

The officials stressed that there are ample underutilized capacities for economic cooperation, emphasizing the importance of the Economic Cooperation Mixed Commission’s work in that context, as well as potential to boost cooperation in the spheres of culture, education and tourism.

The National Assembly Speaker again expressed condolences and solidarity with the Iranian people on the terror attacks on the Iranian Assembly building and Khomeini’s mausoleum, reaffirming Serbia’s readiness to cooperate in the fight against extremism and terrorism.
