Gojkovic: Joining Board of Governors Increases Serbia’s Visibility

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano in Vienna, where she headed the Serbian delegation to the annual General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Gojkovic highlighted the importance of Serbia’s entering the organisation’s Board of Governors, stressing that it would increase Serbia’s visibility in the global sustainable development efforts through the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Gojkovic said that the efforts to improve the nuclear security and protection from ionizing radiation, which Serbia continuously invests in, are in full agreement with the EU accession process and harmonization of the national with the EU legislation.

In that context, Gojkovic stated that Serbia is ready to conduct the procedure for the ratification of the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste.

Gojkovic said that Serbia is committed to the agency’s international standards and interested in the continued realization of the project of additional improvement of the radiological situation in Vinca for which the International Atomic Energy Agency’s support is exceptionally important.
