Stefanovic Meets with Non-Resident Latvian Ambassador

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic, met today with the non-resident Ambassador of Latvia to Serbia Ieva Briede.

Stefanovic and Briede opined that there is significant room to improve interparliamentary cooperation, as well as economic and trade relations between Serbia and Latvia. They agreed that the introduction of direct flights between Riga and Belgrade is an excellent move to foster closer ties between the two nations.

Ambassador Briede stressed that Latvia strongly supports EU enlargement and welcomes all countries that adhere to fundamental European values and principles. That is why it is important that Serbia aligns its foreign policy with the European one as soon as possible, she said.

Stefanovic pointed out that it is in Serbia’s interest to join in the family of European nations, for political, economic and security reasons, which is precisely why he had proposed to the Foreign Affairs Committee and the National Assembly the Resolution on the alignment of Serbia’s foreign policy with the foreign policy of the European Union in the form of restrictive measures towards the Russian Federation. He stressed that there is no such thing as political neutrality and if Serbia does not align its foreign policy with the EU, it is pushing itself into isolation and weakening its position in the protection of vital national interests regarding Kosovo-Metohija.

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee also said that the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina is necessary in order to ensure a decent life for the citizens of Kosovo-Metohija, adding that Serbia cannot recognise the independence of the so-called state of Kosovo, because that would be a national humiliation.

The officials also exchanged opinions on the current situation in Europe and the impact of the war in Ukraine. The Latvian Ambassador was also interested in the internal situation in Serbia.

Borko Stefanovic said that currently, all other issues in Serbia are overshadowed by the recent tragic events that shook our country, expressing concern and emphasising the obvious responsibility of the Government of Serbia for the current situation.

In the course of the conversation, Stefanovic said that the Latvia’s messages regarding EU enlargement were encouraging, stressing that it would be of great importance to speed up the integration process of the Western Balkans, because we can make Europe better only if we are together.
