Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Meets with Kragujevac Ombudsman

The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Aleksandar Markovic met with the Ombudsman of the City of Kragujevac whose office also covers the municipalities of Batocina, Lapovo, Knic, Arandjelovac and Raca.

On behalf of the Ombudsman’s Office the meeting was attended by Ombudsman Jelena Milivojevic, Head of the support service Ivan Kovacevic, and expert associate Radivoje Joksovic.

The officials discussed advancing the cooperation between the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality and the local ombudsman’s offices, as well as the challenges the citizens come up against when trying to exercise their rights at the local level. One of the issues in the focus of the meeting was the availability of the Ombudsman’s office to the citizens and the efficient resolution of their complaints.

Markovic stressed that the local ombudsmen play an important role in the system of protection of human and minority rights because they are the first instance the citizens address when their civic rights are violated by local self-government bodies. The Committee Chairman emphasised that uninterrupted communication and exchange of information is key for the advancement of the offices’ operation and for strengthening the citizens’ trust in the institutions.

The Ombudsman of the City of Kragujevac briefed the host on the work of the office, in operation since 2003, as well as the current activities, everyday problems and cooperation between the local ombudsmen.

The officials agreed that further cooperation is needed to strengthen the protection of civic rights and promote equality in the Sumadija District.
