Sixth Sitting of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region

At the sitting held on 13 December, the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region considered the Information of the representatives of the Timisoara Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, regarding their request for the return of confiscated property on the territory of Romania.

Milorad Ilic, representative of the Timisoara Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, stressed that the trial for the return of confiscated property to the Timisoara Diocese has been going on for 18 years. Said property is the Endowment of Makra Stojkovic, a two-storey house and land in the centre of Timisoara, confiscated from the Diocese by the Romanian state in 1968. The Timisoara Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church would, if the confiscated property is returned, put the premises at the disposal of the Serbian Grammar School Dositej Obradovic, said Ilic.
The sitting was attended by Rastko Jankovic, advisor to the Director of the Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, who offered the Office’s support in resolving the issue related to the return of confiscated property in Timisoara.
In the course of the discussion, the Committee members agreed that the issue is also very important from the aspect of state relations between Serbia and Romania and adopted the Conclusion that the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region should address the relevant institutions which can help resolve the problem outlined by the representative of the Timisoara Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, in an official letter.

The sitting was chaired by Aleksandar Cotric, Committee Chairman.
