Seventh Sitting of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region

At the sitting held on 27 December, the members of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region considered and unanimously adopted the Information on the work and planned activities for 2013 of the Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, as well as the Information on the work and planned activities for 2013 of the Union of Serbs in Romania.


The sitting was attended by Dr Slavka Draskovic, Director of the Office for Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Dr Slavomir Gvozdenovic, President of the Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region and MP at the Romanian Parliament, and Ognjan Krstic, President of the Union of Serbs in Romania.
The Director of the Office for Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Dr Slavka Draskovic, presented the work of the Office, established by governmental ordinance for the purpose of controlling the laws from the sphere of the diaspora, protection of interests and offering assistance to Serbian citizens in the diaspora. The Office has created an inter-departmental working group which is currently preparing a draft law amending and modifying the Law on Serbs in the Region, while the organisation of a public hearing on the topic is also being planned, added Draskovic.
The MP at the Romanian Parliament and President of the Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Dr Slavomir Gvozdenovic, commended Serbia’s efforts on addressing the issues of Serbs in the region and presented the work of the Assembly he presides over. Through councils and working bodies, the Assembly works on regulating the issues relating to the diaspora and Serbs in the region. Gvozdenovic proposed the organisation of a yearly Assembly of Serbs in the region, as well as Economic Assembly of Serbs in the region. The President of the Union of Serbs in Romania, Ognjan Krstic, said that the Union is an organisation with a specific statute, gathering as many as 18 ethnic minorities. The Union has been around for 23 years and is successfully realising cultural events, evidenced in the fact that, by November of this year, it had organised as many as 17 events. The Union also deals with publishing, and aims to create regional centres for the study of the Serbian language.
In the course of the debate the Committee members discussed the activities of the Union of Serbs in the region, the potential for organising the Assembly of Serbs and Economic Assembly, as well as the prospects for opening up new border crossings with Romania.
In the continuation of the sitting, MP Janko Veselinovic informed the Committee members that the Committee Chairman and he had received the Emigrant Society’s activity plan and financial plan which will be distributed to all the Committee members.
The Committee Chairman also proposed that a National Assembly delegation should visit Romania to commemorate St. Sava’s Day.

The sitting was chaired by Aleksandar Cotric, Committee Chairman.
