The Parliamentary Friendship Group with Romania, headed by its President Sinisa Stamenkovic, met today at the National Assembly House, with the Romanian Ambassador in Belgrade Ion Macovei.

In a friendly and open meeting, the officials declared the overall relations between Serbia and Romania favourable, but added that there is room to further improve cooperation in various spheres. Group President Sinisa Stamenkovic pointed out the importance of the new bilateral agreement on social security between the two countries, emphasising the potential offered by regional, border and cross-border cooperation between Serbia and Romania on Serbia’s road of speedy Euro-integration.

In the meeting, the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Romania touched on certain issues concerning the improvement of the two countries’ relations, highlighting Romania’s assistance to Serbia in the times of severe energy crisis, as well as the need to further improve the two countries’ economic cooperation. They also expressed gratitude for Romania’s support of Serbia on its road to the European Union.

The Romanian Ambassador pledged that the cooperation between Serbia and Romania would continue in the spirit of tradition and friendship of the two nations as it facilitates the resolution of all problems. He stressed that Romania is prepared to discuss all issues in an open and friendly manner, and that his country will, despite the great crisis it faces, continue to offer support to Serbia on its road to the EU. Ambassador Macovei repeated the position that Romania would never recognise the independence of Kosovo.

At the end of the meeting the officials concluded that a meeting between Serbian and Romanian parliamentarians should be organised as soon as possible.
