Nigerian Security Studies National Institute Representatives in Study Visit at National Assembly
Representatives of the National Institute for Security Studies of the Federal Republic of Nigeria paid a study visit to the National Assembly today.
Participants of the Intelligence Management Course "Globalization and Regional Integration: Implications for Sustainable Development in Africa", who are on a multi-day study visit to Serbia, spoke with the Chairman of the Security Services Control Committee MA Igor Becic and the Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Dr Milos Jovanovic about Serbia’s experiences of the globalization process and were briefed on the initiatives in the field of regional cooperation which the Republic of Serbia is involved in.
Chairmen Becic and Jovanovic informed the Nigerian delegation about the competences and scope of work of both committees, with special reference to the specifics that characterize their activities. They also informed the delegation about the norms guiding the committees’ work, especially those concerning the committees’ control role over the work of the security sector. Becic emphasized the specifics of the work of the Security Services Control Committee, as well as the importance of its supervisory visits to the security services.
The chairmen of both committees particularly emphasized the importance of joint visits to units of the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, both for the MPs and the members of the security forces.
The Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Dr Milos Jovanovic informed the Nigerian delegation about the institute regular activity reports by relevant ministries to the Committee, as well as the importance of the institute of public hearings on topics of importance to the defence sector.
Becic and Jovanovic thanked Nigeria for not recognizing the so-called independence of our southern province of Kosovo-Metohija.
In the discussion that followed, the guests and hosts exchanged opinions on the improvement of cooperation between Serbia and Nigeria, whose long-term friendship and partnership were highlighted by the head of the Nigerian delegation, Emiloye Oyeyele, Director of the National Institute for Security Studies of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They also discussed Serbia’s military neutrality, the importance of educational training for the holders of the highest positions, financing of the work of security services and the control of public spending in the security sector, as well as regional security and the need to respect the principles of international law.
