At 10 a.m. on Sunday 23 July 2006, state flags of the Republic of Serbia were ceremonially hoisted onto the flagpoles in front of the National Assembly building (the former Federal Parliament) in Belgrade’s Nikola Pasic Square.

This act marked the symbolic end of the process of Serbia’s assumption of powers of a sovereign nation, based on the decision adopted by the National Assembly on 5 June 2006. Serbian coats-of-arms were mounted onto walls in both Assembly halls in the Nikola Pasic Square building.

The ceremony was attended by the National Assembly chairman, deputies, the Secretary General and members of the Assembly Support Service, journalists, and numerous members of the public.

After the flags were hoisted, Mr Markovic addressed the public, saying that the building had become the Serbian Assembly after a century of existence, and that he hoped it would remain so over the coming century as well.
