National Assembly Speaker Receives UK Ambassador to Serbia

In the first meeting of the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic and the UK Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Sian MacLeod since his election to the post, the officials discussed the continuation of bilateral cooperation and current political issues.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr Vladimir Orlic commented on the countries' high level of bilateral relations, indicating the possibility to further strengthen parliamentary cooperation, primarily through the activities of the two national parliaments’ friendship groups.

Ambassador Sian MacLeod agreed that parliamentary cooperation is extremely important, expressing hope that the future Parliamentary Friendship Group with the UK would be as large as the previous legislature’s.

The National Assembly Speaker took the opportunity to thank the UK for the support it provides Serbia on its European path and the reforms that are being successfully implemented in our country. The results of the parliamentary and presidential elections unequivocally testify to the citizens’ the strong and continuous support for the state policy pursued by Serbia, headed by President Aleksandar Vucic, stressed Orlic.

The meeting also touched on the economic cooperation and investments in infrastructure projects, with MacLeod highlighting the numerous opportunities opened by the presence of the "UK Export Finance" credit agency in Serbia. This agency already supports the Moravian Corridor construction project.

Orlic pointed out that peace and stability are essential for further economic development, adding that Belgrade is making great efforts to preserve them in Kosovo-Metohija, bearing in mind that the Serbian people in that area are facing great challenges and heavy pressures caused by Pristina’s irresponsible moves. "We remain committed to dialogue and the search for peaceful solutions, protecting our people and their vital interests at all times," said Orlic.

In addition to the abovementioned topics, the officials also discussed the energy situation in Europe, economic challenges and relations in the region, agreeing that there is significant room to improve various types of cooperation between the two countries.
