National Assembly Speaker Meets with Head of EU Delegation to Serbia

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Head of EU Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret to discuss the continuation of cooperation and the role of the National Assembly in Serbia’s European integration.

The National Assembly Speaker expressed his gratitude for the support of Serbia’s European path, stressing that EU membership is part of our state policy and our strategic commitment. Dr Vladimir Orlic said that the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections testify to the citizens’ conclusive support of the state policy which means further economic strengthening for Serbia.

"Economically speaking, the European Union is also Serbia's most important partner not only in terms of the volume of investment and trade, but also because of the important reforms which set the groundwork for the economic progress of our society," emphasised Orlic.

In the course of the meeting he also opined that the National Assembly has done an excellent job in improving election conditions and establishing inter-party dialogue, the results of which are clearly visible in the pluralism in the National Assembly, as well as in the assessment of both actors and observers that election conditions in Serbia have never been better. For the first time, there were consultations before the constituting session of the new Assembly legislature with all the representatives of the parliamentary groups, where the leading positions of the parliamentary committees were proportionally allocated.

Orlic went on to say that he expected a continuation of the successful cooperation between the National Assembly and the EU through the activities of parliamentary committees and delegations.

Ambassador Giaufret expressed his confidence in the National Assembly’s good work dynamics considering the current legislature’s political pluralism, wishing that the opposition and the ruling majority be efficient and constructive in the performance of their roles.

He said that the complex political situation in the world increases the need for close cooperation, adding that the European Union sees the Western Balkans as part of its family and that the EU enlargement process though lengthy is achievable and in the interest of Europe as a whole. Speaking of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, the Ambassador congratulated Serbia on its constructive approach to finding a solution for the abolition of entry and exit documents which facilitates freedom of movement. The process under the auspices of the EU continues and dialogue is the only way to resolve the remaining issues.

The National Assembly Speaker explained that Serbia constantly faces great challenges and pressures in Kosovo-Metohija caused by the dangerous and irresponsible moves of the Provisional Institutions in Pristina. He added that Serbia’s leadership, headed by President Aleksandar Vucic, invests great efforts into finding solutions that would secure peace and stability and that Serbia would continue to firmly pursue the responsible policy of maintaining its national and state interests.

The meeting also touched on Serbia's confirmed readiness to open a complete new cluster, adoption of legislation and reforms related to the accession process, IPA funds, rule of law, human rights and equality and the agenda for further cooperation with EU institutions.
