National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs Takes Part in EP Foreign Affairs Committee Interparliamentary Meeting

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs took part today in the online Interparliamentary Meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the European Parliament, parliaments of the EU Member States and representatives of the parliaments of the Western Balkans. The topic of the meeting was the EU Enlargement Policy in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The meeting was chaired by David McAllister, Chair of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, with an introductory speech delivered by Oliver Varhelyi, Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement of the European Commission.

In her address, Deputy Speaker Kovacs stressed that the EU accession process is a strategic commitment and the chief foreign policy priority of the Republic of Serbia, adding that the country continuously confirms its commitment to the EU integration process and acceptance of European values and principles. In the period preceding its Union accession, the Republic of Serbia will continue to gradually harmonise its foreign and security policy with the EU policies to ensure full harmonisation by the end of the negotiations.

The Republic of Serbia sincerely regrets everything that is happening in the east of Europe. We view the loss of every human life in Ukraine as a real tragedy.

In accordance with its previous policy of advocating for a consistent and principled observance of the principles of international law, the Republic of Serbia considers it a mistake to violate the territorial integrity of any country, including Ukraine.

We follow the internal developments in the EU very carefully. We are concerned about the same problems that member states face both economically and externally. We hope that the European Union will successfully solve the challenges it is faced with and that the enlargement policy will not be called into question, said Elvira Kovacs.
