Gojkovic at Meets with Austrian President

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen to discuss advancing parliamentary cooperation and overall relations between the two countries, regional issues and European integration.


Gojkovic said that Serbia and Austria enjoy good political and economic relations and a dynamic exchange of visits, adding that it is up to the parliaments, as representatives of the citizens, to contribute to the advancement of bilateral relations.

Gojkovic thanked Austria for its support of Serbia’s European integration, highlighting the Parliament’s key role in the process, especially as regards adjusting the national legislation to the EU acquis.

Gojkovic said that the Serbian Assembly is open to deepening parliamentary cooperation and opined that the upcoming visit of the President of the Austrian National Council Wolfgang Sobotka, under the auspices of Austria’s Presidency of the EU Council, would greatly contribute to it.

Gojkovic went on to say that Belgrade is committed to dialogue with Pristina and ready to continue the talks, but the other side too needs to show that it is willing to talk and find a compromise solution.

Gojkovic stressed that the economic cooperation is excellent and that Austria is one of the most significant economic partners and biggest investors in Serbia, as evidenced by the fact that more than 20,000 people in the country are working in Austrian companies.

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said that the already good relations between Serbia and Austria are on the rise, adding that visits such as his are vital for fostering ever stronger ties between the countries.

Van der Bellen mentioned Austria’s experiences of the EU accession process stressing that modern globalization actualizes the advantages of Euro-integration.

The Austrian President also commented on the development of economic relations, opining that the presence of the Vice-President of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce is a good indicator of the expansion of economic cooperation. Van der Bellen said that it would be good for the two countries to develop cooperation in other areas such as culture, university cooperation and scientific research.
