Gojkovic Launches Official Visit to Georgia by Meeting with Head of Georgian Parliament

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic launched her official visit to Georgia with a meeting with the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze, where the two heads of parliament agreed that this, the first visit at the highest parliamentary level in the history of relations between the two countries, would give a strong impulse to the development of parliamentary and overall cooperation between Serbia and Georgia.


The heads of parliament stressed that Serbia and Georgia enjoy a traditional friendship and good relations and the goal now is to build on that closeness and their common interests to intensify and improve relations across the board, especially in the field of economy which shows significant development potential.

The National Assembly Speaker opined that, at the parliamentary level, it would be useful to intensify meetings and cooperation between the working bodies, especially those in charge of foreign affairs, European integration, economy, trade and culture. Gojkovic and Kobakhidze agreed that it would be good to improve cooperation between the two countries’ parliamentary delegations to international parliamentary organizations and parliamentary friendship groups.

The heads of parliament emphasized how important it is to abide by international law and the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty of internationally recognized states, and Gojkovic thanked Georgia for its unwavering principled support and non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as concerning so-called Kosovo’s attempts to join international organizations and institutions. Kobakhidze stressed that Georgia firmly supports Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and thanked Serbia for supporting Georgia’s territorial integrity.

Speaking of the terrorist act that is the murder of Oliver Ivanovic, Serbian politician from Kosovo-Metohija, the National Assembly Speaker said that Serbia insists to have the crime solved as quickly as possible as it is in the interest of security of the Serbs living in Kosovo-Metohija and overall stability. Gojkovic stressed that Serbia insists on the implementation of the Brussels Agreement, first and foremost the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities and briefed Kobakhidze on the poor condition of the Serb churches, monasteries and cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija.

Gojkovic said that the Euro-integration process is yet another cornerstone of the cooperation between Serbia and Georgia, outlining the important role the Serbian Assembly plays in it by ensuring legislative harmonization and reform. Gojkovic and Kobakhidze agreed that in this context, parliamentary cooperation and exchange of experiences would also prove beneficial.

The two heads of parliament agreed that future efforts should be directed toward economic cooperation and trade, as well as tourism, education and culture.

Gojkovic invited the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament to visit Serbia and help further parliamentary cooperation and overall relations.
