Giaufret Hands Over EC Report to National Assembly Speaker: Serbia’s Progress

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Ambassador Emanuele Giaufret, who handed him over the European Commission’s 2023 Report on Serbia.

The National Assembly Speaker expressed his satisfaction that the EC Report unequivocally confirms our country’s progress in important reforms and numerous individual areas. "Progress was recorded in chapters 23 and 24, in terms of freedom of expression, Serbia was rated even better than in the previous Report, and the Report also emphasises the importance of adopting a set of laws that ensured an independent judiciary," said Dr Orlic, adding that progress had also been noted in the fight against corruption and media freedom, which was especially praised by EC President Ursula von der Leyen in a recent conversation with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

Speaking of the negotiation chapters, he stressed that Serbia has not regressed in any of them, on the contrary - progress has been clearly noted in more than 30. Speaking about Chapter 35 and the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Dr Orlic said that Serbia remains committed to the dialogue and will continue to seek the fulfilment of previously signed agreements, first of all, the final formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities, in accordance with what was signed in 2013 and 2015. "Even EU officials confirm in their statements that, when the dialogue is in a bad state, it comes as the responsibility of Pristina, specifically Albin Kurti, who is trying to destroy the dialogue in every sense", said the National Assembly Speaker, reminding the guest of the daily terror over the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija and the brutal trampling of basic human rights, which, he emphasised, is unimaginable anywhere in Europe today.

He expressed satisfaction that the Report notes Serbia’s economic progress, constant growth of its GDP and the reduction of its lagging behind the EU in the previous years, continuous reduction of unemployment with the simultaneous constant growth of employment, as well as the constant growth of wages and investments. "In addition, speaking of the Serbian Assembly, the Report accurately notes that the percentage of laws adopted under urgent procedure in the current legislature is 12%, which is significantly lower than during some of the previous legislatures," said Dr Orlic, adding: "The state policy led by the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, and implemented by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Serbia, is aimed at the constant progress and strengthening of our country and society in all areas. I am convinced that we will continue this policy and that, in the coming years, it will bring only good results and new successes for Serbia".
