Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Meets with Armenian Ambassador

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic met today with the non-resident Armenian Ambassador to Serbia based in Prague H.E. Ashot Hovakimyan, to discuss the relations between the two countries and the possibilities for improving interparliamentary cooperation.

Opining that Armenia is a friendly country, Borko Stefanovic went on to say that our relations can be improved through more intensive contacts between parliamentarians, especially through an exchange of visits by delegations of the two parliaments’ foreign affairs committees.

In the course of the conversation, Stefanovic thanked Armenia for not recognising the independence of the so-called state of Kosovo. He informed Ambassador Hovakimyan about the developments in Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that this is a topic of national importance. He stressed that Belgrade is committed to dialogue with Pristina and reaching an agreement to normalise relations, but that it cannot recognise the independence of so-called of Kosovo or its membership in the United Nations.

At the same time, Belgrade is facing pressure to align its foreign policy with the EU, Borko Stefanovic pointed out adding that it is important that, under these circumstances, Serbia takes the right side. That is why Stefanovic pointed out that, as the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, he had submitted a proposal to the National Assembly for a resolution on harmonising the foreign policy of the Republic of Serbia with the foreign policy of the European Union in the form of restrictive measures towards the Russian Federation. He assessed that if it does not align its foreign policy with the European one, Serbia is heading towards isolation, which will make it more difficult to defend its national interests in the matter of Kosovo-Metohija.

Ambassador Ashot Hovakimyan said that Armenia will not recognise the independence of Kosovo and that to resolve the situation Belgrade and Pristina need to talk.

He informed the Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman about the situation in Armenia and the open issues in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The officials jointly assessed that both Serbia and Armenia face inconsistencies in international policy and rules. They agreed that the two countries could intensify interparliamentary cooperation, as well as relations in the fields of culture, education and tourism.
