First Special Sitting of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in 2012

The First Special Sitting of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in 2012 was held on Thursday, 31 May 2012, starting at 2.10 p.m. The sitting was convened by the National Assembly Speaker from the previous legislature, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, in line with article 114, Paragraph 3 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia.


At the First Special Sitting of the National Assembly, the President of the Republic elected in the elections conducted on 6 and 20 May 2012, Tomislav Nikolic, took the oath of office before the National Assembly's new legislature.

The oath of office reads as follows: “I do solemnly swear that I will devote all my efforts to preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the territory of the Republic of Serbia, including Kosovo and Metohija as its constituent part, as well as to provide exercise of human and minority rights and freedoms, respect and protection of the Constitution and laws, preservation of peace and welfare of all citizens of the Republic of Serbia and perform all my duties conscientiously and responsibly.”

The oath was followed by the Serbian national anthem, “God of Justice”.

Having assumed office, President Tomislav Nikolic thanked the citizens of Serbia who elected him, saying that he wanted a different Serbia, united in the struggle for a better life, free of fear of tomorrow and as an equal member of the European Union, which will never give up its sovereignty over Kosovo-Metohija. The President of the Republic told the Members of Parliament that he would help them in the manner stipulated by the Serbian Constitution and if they fight for the citizens and to ensure them better life. He stressed that he would not stop fighting injustice, corruption and crime, monopolies and the rule of the political elite until Serbia became a democratic state governed by law.

The First Special Sitting was chaired by the oldest Member of Parliament, Zaharije Trnavcevic, who congratulated President Tomislav Nikolic, on the behalf of the Members of Parliament and himself, on being elected President of Serbia and wished him success in his new office.

The solemn sitting was attended by former presidents of the Republic, the Prime Minister, deputy prime ministers and Government members, Governor of the National Bank of Serbia, Chairperson and members of the Republic Electoral Commission, President of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, Police Chief and the directors of the Security Information Agency, Military Security Agency and Military Intelligence Agency, as well as the Ombudsman, Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and representatives of the State Audit Institution, Anti-Corruption Agency and Council of the Republic Broadcasting Agency. The sitting was attended by the presidents of the Constitutional Court of Serbia and Supreme Court of Cassation, Republic Public Prosecutor, War Crimes Prosecutor and Organised Crime Prosecutor, as well as representatives of the churches and religious communities in Serbia, university rectors and heads of diplomatic and international missions in Serbia.
