Extraordinary Bilateral Relations between Kingdom of Spain and Republic of Serbia Confirmed

At today’s meeting, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Serbia, H.E. Raul Bartolome Molina jointly opined that the Republic of Serbia and the Kingdom of Spain are friendly countries, with no outstanding issues, also confirming the mutual support for the two countries’ territorial integrity and sovereignty.

National Assembly Speaker Dr Orlic thanked Spain for its clear and continuous support of Serbia’s European path, the ultimate goal of which is full membership in the European Union. He went on to say that Spain’s strong and principled support on the issue of Kosovo-Metohija is also very important to Serbia. In that light, he mentioned "the historic address of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic at the United Nations General Assembly, and its important message - that respect for international law and the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the United Nations member states is of the utmost importance and represents the fundamental principles which the UN itself rests on."

"We are proud of Serbia’s principled position on these issues and the fact that there is no difference between our two countries there," said Dr Orlic.

"It is important for Serbia to deal with the challenges caused by Pristina’s dangerous and unilateral moves which threaten the peace and stability in this part of Europe on a daily basis," said the National Assembly Speaker, adding that Belgrade advocates dialogue and the preservation of peace and stability for itself, as well as for others, in a situation that is far from easy, and thanked Spain for understanding and supporting Serbia’s efforts to this end.

Ambassador Bartolome Molina stressed that Spain's position on Kosovo-Metohija would not change. He also pointed out that Spain, as well as its citizens, strongly support Serbia's EU accession. He opined that the "Open Balkans" regional initiative is very important from the aspect of cooperation and European integration of the Western Balkans.

In the course of the meeting, the officials agreed that the successful political dialogue and understanding between the Republic of Serbia and the Kingdom of Spain should be accompanied by suitable trade and economic relations. In this sense, they emphasised the importance of the historic visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to the Republic of Serbia in July of this year, the result of which was, among other things, the Agreement Proposal for cooperation between the two countries in the field of infrastructure projects, which both parties are actively working on and which should be signed in November of this year. The officials concluded that this would further strengthen the cooperation between the two countries.

"This Agreement creates the conditions conducive to increasing Spanish investments and promoting Serbia as a good investment destination", Ambassador Bartolome Molina said.

National Assembly Speaker Dr Orlic pointed out that economic cooperation and the progress that results from it are among the most important elements of state policy.

The officials also exchanged views on the possibilities for further improvement of interparliamentary cooperation as well as cooperation in the field of culture and tourism, which was facilitated by the establishment of direct flights between Serbia and Spain.
