Advanced Security and Defence Studies 12th Class Attendees at National Assembly

Representatives of the Security Services Control Committee welcomed the attendees of the 12th Class of the Advanced Security and Defence Studies in the National Assembly today, continuing the well-established practice of introducing the attendees of the Studies to the work and control role of the Parliament and its relevant committees.

Security Services Control Committee Chairman MA Igor Becic and Deputy Chairman Aleksandar Markovic, who themselves had once attended of the Advanced Security and Defence Studies, briefed the 12th Class on the National Assembly’s key role in civilian supervision, the laws regulating the basics of security intelligence system of the Republic of Serbia, as well as directing and aligning the work of the security services and supervising their operation.

Becic and Markovic pointed out the specifics of the work of the Security Services Control Committee, which, unlike other National Assembly committees, has nine members and nine deputy members. They said that the Committee supervises the constitutionality and legality of the work of the security services, compliance of their work with the national security strategy, legality of the implementation of secret data collection procedures and measures, budgetary spending and that considers reports and bills within its jurisdiction, launches initiatives and submits bills, as well as establishes facts about observed irregularities and illegalities in the work of the security services.

National Assembly Speaker Dr Vladimir Orlic, welcomed the participants of the 12th Class of the Advanced Security and Defence Studies to the National Assembly, composed of representatives of various state bodies, emphasising the importance of the studies and wishing them success in their further training.

The formal completion of the training takes place in the National Assembly House and on the occasion, by decision of the President of the Republic of Serbia, a replica of a Serbian medieval sword with an inscription, is presented to the trainees which had completed the course. The ceremony is traditionally organised in July and the swords are presented by the Minister of Defense.
