We Will Strengthen Democracy, Discrimination Is Unacceptable

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic congratulated the citizens of Serbia on the International Day of Democracy, stressing that the parliament would continue to strengthen democracy, freedom of thought and speech as the fundamental values of every democratic society.

This day offers the opportunity to remember the importance of democracy, its principles and tenets and point out the need to eliminate discrimination in society.

Our transparency and openness to the media and citizens are extremely important for building trust between the institutions and citizens.

We strive to open the doors of the “adults’ institution” to the youth which is why I would like to underline the topic of this year’s International Day of Democracy – “Engaging young people on democracy.

The National Assembly has recognised the importance of engaging young people on democratic processes and, by conducting projects such as the “simulation of parliamentary work”, attended by about 3000 high-school students in the past few years, we strive to bring the legislative process and parliament’s work closer to the youth.

The National Assembly will work on further engaging young people, aware that this strengthens their social responsibility.
