Video Meeting of National Assembly Speaker Ivica Dacic and WFD CEO Anthony Smith

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic had a video meeting with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy CEO Anthony Smith. The meeting was also attended by UK Ambassador to Serbia Sian MacLeod.


Both sides expressed satisfaction with the cooperation so far and readiness to continue it. To that end, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a period of three years.

The National Assembly Speaker said that one of the goals he set when taking office was to increase the efficiency of the National Assembly and all of its bodies, a task in which the assistance of partners and their support programmes are of great importance. He spoke of the joint activities and the Foundation’s support of the Assembly’s Health and Family Committee, the establishment of the Subcommittee for monitoring the epidemiological situation due to the presence of the infectious disease COVID-19, as well as the Health and Family Committee’s sittings outside Belgrade (in Merosina and Sabac), with the goal of raising public interest in vaccination in municipalities where the percentage of vaccinated citizens was very low, in which the Westminster Foundation provided help and support.

Westminster Foundation for Democracy CEO Anthony Smith spoke of the a long-standing cooperation with the National Assembly and expressed satisfaction that the Westminster Foundation could provide support to in the field of health in the difficult circumstances caused by the pandemic. He pointed out that the relations between Serbia and the UK have significantly improved in recent years and expressed hope that they would continue to develop.

Ambassador McLeod stressed that the National Assembly can count on the Foundation as a partner ready to support all efforts to ensure efficient and transparent operation, as well as strengthen the resilience of the parliament and its readiness to respond to various challenges such as the pandemic.

The National Assembly Speaker pointed out that, in his previous posts, he had invested a lot of effort into improving cooperation between Serbia and the UK, and that in his current position he would strive to strengthen cooperation between the parliaments.
