Twenty-Fourth Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting held on 18 October the members of the Environmental Protection Committee considered the Bill on Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxic Weapons and on their Destruction in principle.

Branka Latinovic, Acting Head of the Arms Control Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs briefly outlined the Bill to the Committee members saying that the obligation to adopt the Bill stems from the ratification of the UN Convention of the same name. The Bill defines the elements for the implementation of the Convention and executes the obligations for the implementation of Council of Europe Resolution 1540 from 2004 relating to additional measures UN member states should implement to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The adoption of said Bill is also an obligation stemming from the harmonisation of domestic and EU legislation.

Following a short debate the Committee members unanimously accepted the Bill in principle.

In the continuation, Committee member Milan Dimitrijevic objected to the fact that the Committee failed to debate three items on the agenda for the First Sitting of the Second Regular Session of the National Assembly which fall within its competence. He also proposed holding a special Committee sitting to address the accident in the municipality of Zajaca near Loznica where the children from the area were discovered to have a high concentration of lead in their blood, as well as waste storage in Serbia in general.

The Committee members agreed with the proposal and agreed to hold the sitting after consultations with the Committee Chairman and ministry in charge.

The sitting was chaired by Svetlana Stojakovic-Milovanovic, Committee Deputy Chairperson.
