Tomic and Sollorano Discuss Cooperation on Boosting Energy Efficiency

The Chairperson of the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy and the Serbian Parliamentary Energy Policy Forum Prof. Dr Aleksandra Tomic met with UNDP Resident Representative Irena Vojackova Sollorano.

Prof. Dr Aleksandra Tomic informed Sollorano about the scope of the Committee she chairs and the activities and results achieved since their establishment by the three informal parliamentary groups - Serbian Parliamentary Energy Policy Forum, Women’s Parliamentary Network and the Green Parliamentary Group. She stressed that the National Assembly is aware of how important energy efficiency is and has spared no effort to raise public awareness on the issue.

“The official handover of energy passports for the buildings of the Parliament, Serbian Government and the Palace of Serbia containing specific guidelines on how to improve energy efficiency and achieve as much as 30% of savings in the consumption of electrical energy helped spread the word on the issue”, stressed Tomic. She said she believed that these guidelines could be very useful for the improvement of energy efficiency at the local level and in private households. Tomic said that discussing energy efficiency has drawn attention to the need to pass a new engineering law.

UNDP Resident Representative Irena Vojackova Sollorano agreed that the National Assembly should take active part in achieving energy efficiency and be the example for the local self-governments to follow. She said that the use of energy from renewable resources and raising the capacity of power plants fuelled by biomass in Serbia are two things that could stand to be improved. Sollorano accepted Prof. Dr Aleksandra Tomic’s suggestion to draft a joint plan of cooperation between the National Assembly and the UNDP in the area of energy efficiency, stressing that the parliamentarians can count on UNDP’s strong will to achieve results in said field.
