Strengthening US-Serbia Defence and Security Cooperation

The Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Aleksandar Markovic met today with the Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Serbia H.E. Anthony Godfrey to discuss cooperation in the field of security.

The Chairman of the Committee informed the Ambassador about the Committee’s mode of operation and the supervisory role that the Assembly has over the executive branch. He said that the Committee’s scope of work is determined by the Rules of Procedure and is very extensive, because its competencies reach the field of defence, including the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Interior. He added that the Ministry of Defence is obliged to submit quarterly reports to the members of the Committee, and the Committee also organises visits to organisational units and relevant ministries. Markovic took the opportunity to thank the US Government for the opportunity to train, educate and improve the Army and Police of the Republic of Serbia.

The Ambassador said that the position of Chairman of the Defence and Security Committee carries a great responsibility and expressed confidence that the cooperation between the two countries in the field of army, police and intelligence services will continue and improve. He explained that the US Senate has enormous powers and control over the executive branch, to the extent that it approves the costs for the improvement of the defence sector. He added that the goal of the United States is to support the Serbia’s goal, that is, membership in the European Union. The Ambassador added that it is certain that a US parliamentary delegation would visit Brussels, which would be an opportunity for a meeting of parliamentarians in Europe as well.

The officials also discussed the peacekeeping missions both countries participate in, and also agreed that it is very important to make the parliament’s oversight role more visible. The officials expressed readiness to use the opportunity for visits at the bilateral level as soon as the opportunity arises, expressing hope that this opportunity would appear in the near future.
