Strengthening Syria-Serbia Political and Economic Cooperation
The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Syria Miroslav Lazanski met today at the National Assembly House with the Syrian Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires Ousman Saab.
Lazanski welcomed the Syrian Charge d’Affaires saying that Serbia holds the Syrian people in high regard and supports the state’s efforts to combat terrorism. Lazanski stressed that the prospects for strengthening the political and economic relations between the two countries, dating back to the time of the Non-Aligned Movement, are very good. He thanked Syrian for its principled stance on Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that a number of Syrian refugees bound for Western European countries had remained in Serbia. Lazanski went on to brief the Charge d’Affaires on the work of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, saying that a number of MPs are would like to visit Syria.
The Syrian Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires Ousman Saab said that Syria considers Serbia a friend, especially after it had been imposed the negative image of a terrorist country. Saab said that Syria would soon be able to announce a great victory over terrorism, adding that the rebuilding process has already started. He stated that he hopes for cooperation between the two countries, be it political or economic, adding that he would aid the initiative for the MPs’ visit to Syria and stressing that parliamentarians play an important role in fostering diplomatic ties between the two countries. Saab added that Syria respects Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and would not change its stance.
