Slovak National Council Delegation Visits National Assembly

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Djordje Milicevic and the members of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society and the Culture and Information Committee met with the delegation of the Slovak National Council’s Education, Youth, Science and Sports Committee and Culture and Media Committee to discuss interparliamentary cooperation and how to advance the cooperation between their respective parliamentary committees.


National Assembly Deputy Speaker Djordje Milicevic welcomed the Slovak delegation on the behalf of National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic and himself, stressing that the two countries share a traditional friendship. He said that the highest level of political dialogue between the countries is evidenced by the recent exchange of parliamentary delegations. The National Assembly Deputy Speaker emphasized the importance of interparliamentary cooperation as cooperation between elected representatives of the people. He thanked Slovakia for its respecting international law and not recognizing the self-declared independence of Kosovo and for its support of Serbia’s cause during Kosovo’s UNESCO bid, stressing how important it is to preserve the Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija.

The Chairman of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society Muamer Zukorlic spoke about the excellent relations between Serbia and Slovakia and the signed education and sports cooperation treaties, adding that cooperation in the spheres of science, IT and technological development could stand to be improved. Zukorlic briefed the guests on the National Assembly’s extensive legislative activity in the field of education stressing that the Slovak experience has proved most useful to the Committee when said legislation was discussed and passed. Zukorlic added that an exchange of experiences with the Slovak colleagues as regards implementation would also be useful.

The Chairman of the Culture and Information Committee Mirko Krlic highlighted the importance of the Slovak national minority’s art in Serbia, emphasizing its contribution to the country’s rich cultural life. Krlic mainly spoke about the possible intensification of cooperation and exchange of experiences in the field of culture and the media.

The Chairman of the Slovak Education, Youth, Science and Sports Committee Lubomir Petrak spoke about the chances to exchange experiences related to the educational reform in Serbia and Slovakia. Petrak said that an exchange of student visits could play a big role in bringing the two nations together, and also mentioned that there is great interest for a reciprocal recognition of diplomas.

The Chairman of the Culture and Media Committee Dusan Jarjabek emphasized the importance of exchanging experiences related to the adoption and implementation of media laws.

The two parliaments’ committee members also exchanged views and experiences concerning the protection and improvement of minority rights in the fields of education, culture and the media.
The meeting was also attended by Slovak Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Dagmar Repcekova.
