Seventh Sitting of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee

At the sitting held on 13 September, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee considered the activity information of the Ministry of the Interior for the periods October – December 2016, January - March and April - June 2017, as well as the Ministry of the Interior Internal Control Sector 2016 Activity Report.

The Ministry’s information was presented by Minister of the Interior Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic who outlined the effects of the anti-crime and narcotics trade actions, and efforts to supress domestic violence and hi-tech crime.

Speaking of the security situation in the Ground Security Zone and in the south of Serbia Minister Stefanovic said that it is peaceful, but there are risk factors. The security situation at the state border is stable and the migratory wave is steadily dying down.

The Committee members were briefed on road traffic safety and protection and rescue in emergencies.
The Minister of the Interior also spoke about the realized international cooperation and the Ministry’s activities concerning Serbia’s EU accession process.

In the course of the debate the Committee members asked for additional information on certain cases, the fight against narcotics trade and crime, suppression of violence at sporting events and the state-of-play and effects of the legalization of firearms. They also spoke about the cooperation between the police and security services and the security situation in Serbia and the city of Belgrade.

After the debate the Committee accepted the activity information of the Ministry of the Interior for the periods October – December 2016, January - March and April - June 2017.

The Ministry of the Interior Internal Control Sector 2016 Activity Report was presented by Assistant Minister - Internal Control Sector Chief Milos Oparnica. He said that in the reporting period the Sector had worked on improving the normative framework for the prevention and suppression of corruption in the Ministry of the Interior. In the process the Sector applied the good practice used by the services in the region and the EU such as integrity testing, corruption risk analysis and investigation of the Ministry employees’ financial standing.

The Committee members were impressed by the Sector’s results and stressed how important it was to expand its staff considering the important role it plays in suppressing corruption in the police.

Following a debate the Committee accepted the Ministry of the Interior Internal Control Sector 2016 Activity Report.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Marija Obradovic, and was attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Momcilo Mandic, Marko Djurisic, Balsa Bozovic, Stefana Miladinovic, Bozidar Delic, Vladimir Djukanovic, Aleksandar Markovic, Ivana Stojiljkovic, Borisav Kovacevic, Prof. Dr Zoran Dragisic, Vladan Zagradjanin and Nenad Bozic.
