Serbian Educational Institutions Need to Strengthen Ties with Serbian Community in Romania

The Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region MA Ivan Kostic and Committee member Aleksandar Cotric met today, at the National Assembly House, with Prof. Dr Slavomir Gvozdenovic, Serbian member of the Romanian Parliament.

The Committee Chairman informed the guest about the Committee’s work and activity programme, emphasising as a priority the preservation of national identity of Serbs living in the diaspora and Serbian schools, language and culture. This, stressed Kostic, calls for a closer cooperation with the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development in order to provide scholarships and motivate Serbian students from Romania to continue their studies in Serbia instead of going to other countries as has so far been the practice. Kostic added that it is necessary to secure enough textbooks in Serbian for all the students in Romania

Prof. Dr Slavomir Gvozdenovic said that Romania has six Serbian elementary schools and one grammar school Dositej Obradovic. He informed the Committee representatives that the Romanian Parliament had passed the Law declaring 21 November as the Day of Serbian Language in Romania.

He again reminded them of the unity of the Serbian people living in Romania, the importance of the existence and work of the Union of Serbs in Romania as an umbrella organisation and informed them that the Serbian national minority is getting ready to nominate their own candidates for MP at the parliamentary elections in Romania in December.

The Committee Chairman and member MA Ivan Kostic and Aleksandar Cotric thanked Mr Gvozdenovic for the constructive meeting and informed him that the Committee is planning to organise a public hearing in November about the rights of Serbs in the region. They also informed him that the Committee is to hold a sitting on 6 October with the topic “Protecting the culture of memory of Serbian victims” and invited him to attend.
