Serbian Assembly delegation meets with American business leaders

The delegation of the Assembly of the Republic of Serbia yesterday morning met representatives of American business associations.

The delegation of the Assembly of the Republic of Serbia yesterday morning met representatives of American business associations. The working breakfast was organised in the presence of managers from the Association for American and European Economy, IBM, the National Association of Manufacturers, which represents major US industries, such as car and steel manufacturing, as well as the Centre for International Trade and Economy.

Members of the delegation addressed American business leaders and stressed the stability and security of Serbia with regard to foreign investment. Mr Bojan Pajtic, chairman of the DOS - Reform of Serbia Deputies’ Group, informed the American businesspeople of the fact that the Assembly had passed a number of laws necessary to attract foreign investment. “We have created the necessary framework for the privatisation and investment process with attractive taxation levels, the lowest in the region, and built a new system of commercial courts to protect investment and ensure fair treatment to investors. These institutions will ensure stable trade and governance, at the same time giving the people of Serbia access to high-quality jobs and good earnings”, Pajtic said.

Vlatko Sekulovic, vice-chairman of the Committee on Development and Foreign Economic Relations, stressed that Serbia had created one of the strongest development programmes in the region, using tax incentives to create favourable conditions for the work of companies whose investments contribute to significant economic growth and the creation of hundreds of jobs in the country. “Ours is the only country in transition which has seen its gross national product rise in the first years of transition. After just three years of hard work at the Assembly, we are about to pass legislation necessary for the successful work of stable social and economic institutions. At the same time, our people have shown their readiness to face the challenges of a market economy”, Sekulovic said.

After the Assembly delegation’s address, the group of businesspeople offered talks with the leaders of President Bush’s administration and the US Senate in order to accelerate the passage of legislation normalising commercial relations between Serbia and the United States. The participants at the meeting agreed that the new government of Serbia and its people have shown great courage and leadership in their dedication to reforming Serbia.

The delegation is made up of Gordana Comic, Vice-president of the Serbian Assembly, Mr Bojan Pajtic, chairman of the DOS “Reform of Serbia” Deputies’ Group, Mr Vlatko Sekulovic, vice-chairman of the Committee on Development and Foreign Economic Relations, and Mr Miroslav Filipovic, Deputy to the Assembly of Serbia and Montenegro and advisor to the acting President of Serbia, Natasa Micic. The aims of their study tour are to meet representatives of the US Congress, especially those who play a key role in the fields of finance, the budget, foreign affairs and economic development. The visit to Washington began on 5 May, and ends on 9 May 2003.
