Serbian Assembly Example for Other Parliaments in Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals

Dr Milorad Mijatovic presented the National Assembly’s work on the development of mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the panel meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Standing Committee for United Nations Affairs in Geneva.


The Serbian Assembly’s experiences were recognized as a best practice example. Mijatovic said that the National Assembly was among the first in the world to assess its capacities for monitoring the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, establishing a Focus Group to monitor the Government’s work, the Assembly committees had started to learn about their obligations and will in the coming period be focusing on young people and local self-governments.

The panel chaired by the President of the Standing Committee Swedish Parliament member Anti Avsan, was attended by Argentinian MP Lucila Crexell and UN Sustainable Development Goals Office Director Nadia Isler.

Delegation member Dr Sanda Raskovic Ivic was elected rapporteur of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade on “The role of free and fair trade and investment in achieving Sustainable Development Goals especially in view of economic equality, sustainable infrastructure, industrialization and innovation”. The report will be compiled over a year and will be completed by the adoption of a resolution at the next spring session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The session is attended by delegations from 137 of the 172 members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and over 700 parliamentarians and 65 heads of parliament from around the world.
