Serbia Can Rely on Brazil’s Support Concerning Kosovo-Metohija Status

The PFG with Brazil met yesterday at the National Assembly House with the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil H.E. Eduardo B. Barbosa.

The Head of the PFG with Brazil Zika Gojkovic thanked Brazil for its principled respect of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and the Ambassador said that Serbia can rely on Brazil’s support because respecting international law is an imperative for the country. He also hopes that Belgrade and Pristina will find a lasting solution to the existing problems through dialogue. The officials agreed that Serbia and Brazil’s traditionally friendly relations and cooperation should be advanced especially in terms of the economy and politics.

The Brazilian Ambassador spoke about the coming 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Brazil, a period during which the two countries supported one another and had a very fruitful relationship. The Ambassador went on to say that he sees the Brazilian delegation’s participation in the 141st IPU Assembly in Belgrade, scheduled for October, as a good opportunity to foster closer ties between the two countries’ parliaments.

Barbosa also spoke about the current political and economic situation in Brazil, saying that his country is embarking on a journey Serbia had already successfully taken – comprehensive political and economic reform.

PFG member Snezana R. Petrovic said that economic reform is hard, but Serbia is a shining example that with the commitment of top brass and public support a positive result is possible. Speaking of the cooperation between the two countries, she believes that advancing agricultural cooperation is something to be seriously considered.

PFG member Ljiljana Malusic said that economic reform calls for determination and bravery which Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic showed in 2014 resulting in a stable economy and decreased unemployment rate – from 27% in 2012 to 10% today, which is the European standard. She went on to speak about cultural cooperation and PFG member Bojan Torbica stressed that there are plenty of areas where it would be mutually beneficial to foster closer tries.
