Second Sitting of the Security Services Control Committee

At the sitting held on 30 September, the Security Services Control Committee reviewed and adopted the Ministry of Defence Services Inspector General activity reports for 2015 and the period 1 January – 30 June 2016.

The reports cover the Inspector General’s most important activities in said periods which give a comprehensive overview of the work and the realised activities and tasks within the Inspector General’s purview. The Committee gave a positive assessment of the Inspector General’s professional conduct and work and gave him full support in the oversight of the work of the security services within the Ministry of Defence believing that this type of control is important from the aspect of advancing the legality and regularity of the security services’ work. The Committee concluded that the military security services should implement the recommendations and measures from the Inspector General’s reports in the coming period, which would contribute to the further improvement of their work.

The Committee members then reviewed and ascertained the Committee’s activity plan for the remainder of 2016. In this period the Committee plans to hold sittings on the security services’ regular reports, which will be followed by supervisory visits to the services, both their headquarters and local units, by which the Committee will fully exercise its legal authority in the field of oversight and control of the work of the security services. According to the plan there is also to be a sitting to which the Committee will invite the President of the State Audit Institution, Ombudsman and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection to present results of the supervision of the security services, review recommendations and agree on future cooperation.

The Committee passed the Decision on the manner in which Security Services Control Committee sittings discussing classified data are to be held and the Decision on the manner in which the Security Services Control Committee is to conduct direct oversight.

The Committee also reviewed the civic petitions and proposals it had received, concerning the work of the security services.

The part of the sitting in which the Committee reviewed the Ministry of Defence Services Inspector General activity reports was closed to the public.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman MA Igor Becic.
