Second Sitting of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality

At the sitting held on 22 December 2022, the members of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality considered the Ombudsman’s 2021 Regular Annual Report and the Commissioner for Protection of Equality 2021 Regular Annual Report.

The part of the Ombudsman’s 2021 Regular Annual Report referring to human and minority rights and gender equality, was presented by Ombudsman MA Zoran Pasalic and Deputy Ombudsperson Jelena Stojanovic who pointed out that 2021 was an important year, among other things, because the new Law on the Ombudsman was adopted which improved this institution’s independence and efficiency.

Following a brief discussion, the Committee members adopted several conclusion proposals by majority vote, which will be forwarded to the National Assembly for further consideration and adoption.

The Committee went on to consider the Commissioner for Protection of Equality 2021 Regular Annual Report, presented by Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic. She pointed out that in addition to the health crisis, violence against women and domestic violence were also very much in the focus of public attention. During 2021, more than 3,200 citizens addressed the Commissioner in different ways and two reports were presented: Special Report on Discrimination against Older Persons and Special Report on Discrimination against Children, stressed the Commissioner for Protection of Equality. Also, in 2021, the Law on Gender Equality was adopted, as well as the 2021-2030 Gender Equality Strategy.

Following a short discussion, the Committee members adopted a number of conclusion proposals, which will be forwarded to the National Assembly for further consideration and adoption.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Dr Muamer Bacevac, and was attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Momcilo Vuksanovic, Sandra Jokovic, Dr Anna Oreg, Vesna Nedovic, Miloratka Bojovic, Dr Dragoljub Ackovic, Branimir Jovanovic, Dr Nada Macura, Prof. Dr Zoran Radojicic, Natasa Tasic Knezevic and Andrijana Vasic.
