The exhibition was opened by National Assembly Speaker Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic who said that decades had passed, an era, and the everyday objects on display today have become historic exhibits. Recrimination and lack of understanding have been forgotten or are viewed in common speech, from a historic distance, added Dr Stefanovic stressing that no part of history should be renounced. This exhibition allows us to learn more about the royal regents and this period of our history, without prejudice, concluded Dr Stefanovic. The exhibition on the royal regents – Prince Pavle Karadjordjevic, Dr Radenko Stankovic and Dr Ivo Perovic – who ruled on the behalf of the underage King Petar II Karadjordjevic (1923-1970), between 1934 and 1941, is a continuation of the cooperation between the National Assembly and the Novi Sad City Museum.
The guests were also addressed by the Mayor of Novi Sad, Milos Vucevic, who said that the Novi Sad City Museum prepared the exhibition in order to justly portray a specific time of Serbian history, adding that the exhibition is a way to show respect not only to a historic period, but also to the individuals who left a deep impact on Serbian history. Vucevic said that the exhibition helps us better understand the Serbian history between the two world wars, stressing the role of the individual in the times before the outbreak of conflict.
Princess Jelisaveta Karadjordjevic, daughter of Prince Pavle Karadjordjevic, stressed that the exhibition is proof that Serbia is seeking the truth about itself. Natalija Stankovic, daughter-in-law of royal regent Dr Radenko Stankovic, reminded the guests about his life. The author of the exhibition MA Gordana Petkovic thanked the patrons of the exhibition which she spent more than two years preparing. The choir of Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj Grammar School form Novi Sad performed at the opening of the exhibition which was also attended by numerous cultural and political VIPs.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the last two weekends of September as part of European Heritage Days, as well as during the working week, with a mandatory day’s notice.
