Roundtable on Fight Against Terrorism
Today, the National Assembly House hosted a roundtable entitled “Western Balkan Countries and Fight against Terrorism” as part of the regional prayer breakfast.
“The Western Balkan countries should define their role in the fight against terrorism because on this issue we are on very much the same path as the rest of the world. Serbia is part of Europe, aiming to become a member of the EU, and therefore we want contribute to the fight”, stressed Marinkovic.
Serbian Minister of Defence Zoran Djordjevic and Police Director Vladimir Rebic also spoke about the security situation in Serbia, briefing the participants of the roundtable on the characteristics of terrorism today, the migrant crisis as the source of terrorism, and the Western Balkans’ potential to contribute to the international fight against terrorism.
Montenegrin Minister of Internal Affairs Goran Danilovic, Albanian MP Fatmir Mediu, Macedonian Defence Minister Zoran Jolevski, Republic of Srpska Police Director Gojko Vasic, Bundestag member Josip Juratovic, Chairman of the European Integration and Regional Cooperation Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska Branislav Borenovic, former Mayor of Novi Pazar Meho Mahmutovic and US congressmen spoke about the ties between corruption, crime and terrorism as challenges faced by both state bodies and societies as a whole.
The participants of the roundtable agreed that regional and international cooperation in the fight against terrorism should be endorsed, as should the fight against poverty in the region, and that the expanding right-wing ideas should be halted as they could be the generator of terrorist acts. They opined that political elites should be built up for the fight against terrorism and the breaking of the ties between corruption, crime and terrorism. The countries of the Western Balkans are ready to cooperate in the fight against terrorism both at the regional and international level considering that terrorism is a global problem, the participants concluded.
The roundtable “Western Balkan Countries and Fight against Terrorism” was attended by representatives of ministries of defence and interior, police chiefs and parliamentarians from the region, as well as representatives of the US Congress and German Bundestag.
