Role of Serbian and Iranian Parliaments Key for Improvement of Bilateral Relations

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic met today, at the National Assembly House, with the newly-appointed Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Serbia H.E. Hossein Molla Abdollahi, to discuss parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

The officials agreed that the relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Islamic Republic of Iran are friendly and following an upward trend, evidenced in the series of official visits realized in the previous period. They concluded that the parliaments and their relevant committees play a key role in the improvement of overall bilateral relations, and in view of it expect more frequent bilateral visits to intensify cooperation between the two states.

On the behalf of the Foreign Affairs Committee, its Chairman, Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic conveyed deepest condolences on the death of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, saying that, as a historic leader, he had marked an important era for the Iranian people.

Obradovic went on to welcome the newly-appointed Ambassador, trusting that his future efforts would further the relations between the two nations. He also reminded him of the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Iran which is this year, hoping that the two countries’ parliaments would fully contribute to the celebration of this most important of dates.

Speaking of cooperation in general, Obradovic stressed that it would be bolstered by an improvement in economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in the spheres of tourism, sports and culture. At the same time he thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its principled support of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ambassador Abdollahi agreed with Obradovic as regards improving economic relations, because, he said, they should follow the dynamics of the political relations and announced the planned organization of a mutually beneficial business forum.

Finally, the Ambassador thanked the Committee Chairman for his hospitality, hoping that his future work would contribute to the development of both parliamentary and all-round cooperation between the Republic of Serbia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
