Rights of the Child Committee Members Take Part in Panel Discussion on Children's Rights Held in Cooperation with United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child and Inter-Parliamentary Union

Members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child took part in a panel discussion on children's rights" co-organised by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Committee Deputy Chairperson Mrs. Radovanovic pointed out that the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia had recognized the importance of protecting the rights of children in the Republic of Serbia and the need to improve their position more than ten years ago. Guided by that idea, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia set up the Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2012, as a special permanent working body.

The National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia attaches great importance to the protection of child rights, as evidenced by the fact that the abovementioned Committee is headed by the Speaker of the National Assembly and the that all the National Assembly deputy speakers are its members.

The participants of the panel discussion were informed that the Republic of Serbia was among the first countries in the world to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (in 1990), just one year after its adoption, opening up a new era in the protection, promotion and supervision of exercising child rights in the Republic of Serbia.

Further progress was noted with the establishment of the Child Rights Council at the Government of the Republic of Serbia, which proposes national mechanisms for resolving the most important issues in the field of children's rights to the National Assembly’s Committee on the Rights of the Child. The role of the Ombudsman, who, within the framework of his competences, also carries out tasks related to the protection of children's rights, was especially emphasised. Despite the significant progress in this area, it is vital to continuously improve the existing legal solutions and strategic plans in order to better coordinate and exchange data between competent authorities and institutions.

In the course of the panel discussion, the participants especially emphasised the National Assembly’s openness to cooperate with everyone taking part in the protection of children and fighting to expand their rights.
