Reconciliation Policy Key for Balkan People

MP and Chairman of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society Muamer Zukorlic met today with Simona-Mirela Miculescu, representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Office in Belgrade, to discuss the importance of the policy of reconciliation in the Balkans.

Zukorlic stressed that projects in the Balkans are destined for doom without true reconciliation between the people living there. He added that the key problem of the national communities in these areas is how they treat the past, which should he examined objectively and used a lesson for the future.

Also, opening up the state apparatus for young Bosniak officers at all levels would help bridge the gap of distrust in society, said Zukorlic. He suggested setting up a national council for social pacification which would provide the institutional framework for the fight against different types of violence from terrorism and extremism, to violence in sports and the family.

The national council for social pacification would comprise representatives of the legislative and executive power and the non-governmental sector, as well as representatives of relevant institutions and notable individuals who would, based on the strategy to combat different types of violence in society, coordinate the work of state bodies and institutions, and an important aspect of which would be educational”, said Zukorlic.

He hopes that the National Assembly will also set up a reconciliation group which would gather the MPs around this idea despite their party affiliation.

“Formation of a reconciliation group would be a big step forward in the promotion of the reconciliation policy because such a move by the National Assembly would be in set the groundwork for concrete action in society”, concluded Zukorlic.

The representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Office in Belgrade Simona-Mirela Miculescu said that reconciliation policy in the Balkans in crucial for the region, as well as the UN. She stressed that though it supports the EU as the chief actor, the US remains dedicated to reconciliation in the region. She offered support and assistance for the realisation of these ideas, especially in view of the plan of action to prevent global extremism passed by the UN Secretary-General who urged all countries for its realisation.

The meeting was alo attended by MP Jahja Fehratovic, and the officials also exchanged views on the current situation in the region and Sandzak.
