Ragus and Ming Discuss Continuation and Improvement of Serbian and Chinese Legislative Institutions

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson Marina Ragus met today with Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Li Ming to discuss bilateral relations, overall cooperation and, above all, the advancement of parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson Marina Ragus briefed the Chinese Ambassador on the results of the PFG with China in the previous mandate, especially the visits to the most prominent Chinese investments in Serbia, from Huawei, HBIS, high-speed train Soko and the construction of the high-speed railway, and the Mint factories in Sabac and Loznica. She expressed regret over previous mandate’s lacking cooperation at the bilateral parliamentary level, which she hoped would be remedied in the upcoming period, especially as the next meeting of the Commission for Cooperation between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Chinese National People's Congress, which she co-chairs, will be held in Beijing. In view of it, she delivered video material on the work of the previous mandate’s PFG with China with which she would like the Commission to begin its work.

The officials agreed that the current global geopolitical situation is complex and difficult, and Ragus restated Serbia’s gratitude for its steely friendship with China and for its support of our territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as respect of public international law. She also thanked China for its support of Serbia in the UN and the Security Council, adding that Serbia respects China’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, i.e. the One China principle.

“We are proud of our steely friendship with China and our country’s foreign policy led by President Vucic, and though we are an EU candidate, Serbia will not give up its fiends, especially one such as the People’s Republic of China”, said Ragus.

She also thanked China for the economic support it has extended to Serbia, as well as for its aid during the days of the corona when its support was especially vital and for which the Serbian people are grateful to the Chinese people.

The officials agreed that the bilateral relations between the two countries, led by the two heads of state, with the strong support of the legislative institutions, are a solid foundation for cooperation especially in view of the series of agreements Serbia and China had signed, among them the Free Trade Agreement which opened up ample room for further cooperation.

Ambassador Ming congratulated the Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee on being elected to these important posts in the National Assembly, as well as her personal contribution to the development and advancement of the relations between the two parliaments in the previous legislature. He said that China and Serbia share the same views as regards a country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, reaffirming his country’s support to Serbia in this matter in view of what Serbia is faced with and the pressures it is exposed to. He also thanked Serbia for respecting the One China principle.

The officials also discussed intensifying parliamentary cooperation, as well as economic relations and new Chinese investments in Serbia.
