Public Hearing on Women’s Entrepreneurship in Serbia

Today, the National Assembly House hosted a public hearing on Women’s Entrepreneurship in Serbia, organised by Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy.

Opening the public hearing, the Chairperson of the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy, Dr Aleksandra Tomic stressed that labour statistics paint a grim picture for women - it is more difficult for them to find employment, but this opens up the opportunity for them to set up their own business. Tomic stressed that it is important to create a much friendlier economic environment for women, empower them economically, emphasising that to this end the Committee had established excellent cooperation with the Association of Businesswomen in Serbia.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy Radojko Srbljanovic noted the underutilised economic potential of women in Serbia, saying that that they face unemployment, stereotypes and problems such as balancing family life and their jobs. Srbljanovic listed the measures and efforts the Ministry of Economy invested into improving the institutional framework for the establishment of small and medium-size enterprises, competitiveness and innovativeness.
Special Advisor to the Minister of Economy Prof. Dr Ana Trbovic presented the Ministry’s measures and programmes aimed at the development of women’s entrepreneurship. She stressed that a new national entrepreneurship development strategy for the period 2014-2020 is currently being drafted, which will have a special focus on women’s entrepreneurship.
Addressing the participants, the representative of the Women’s Parliamentary Network MP Marija Obradovic drew attention to the significance of the establishment and the results of the efforts of the Women’s Parliamentary Network at the National Assembly. Obradovic also said that the increased participation of women has raised the Parliament’s sensitivity to and interest in topics concerning the improvement of the position of women – combating domestic violence and violence against women, improvement of women’s education and health and economic empowerment of women.
Biljana Ljubic, representative of the International Republican Institute (IRI), spoke of the cooperation between women entrepreneurs and the Women’s Parliamentary Network via the IRI’s project.
The President of the Association of Businesswomen in Serbia Sanja Popovic Pantic and members of the association Dusica Semencenko, Olivera Popovic and Gordana Djurdjevic spoke about women entrepreneurs in Serbia, socially responsible business and public advocacy of women’s entrepreneurship. Entrepreneur and owner of D Express Ljiljana Karaklajic spoke about how to support women as employers in the context of the new labour law.
In the course of the discussion, the MPs, representatives of the Ministry, associations and NGOs noted that, in the drafting process of the new national entrepreneurship development strategy, all the stakeholders should be consulted via public debates, and the new labour law should be passed as soon as possible so as to create a more suitable environment, allow the development of small and medium-size enterprises and with them of women entrepreneurs. The participants of the public hearing agreed that it is important to keep statistical records on women’s entrepreneurship and that rescinding the communal fee for displaying business names on the business premises for medium-size enterprises, as it had previously been done for small enterprises, could be a stimulating measure.
The public hearing was held with the support of the German Academy for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Association of Businesswomen in Serbia.
